History

5th century BC

Due to the excellent natural features, favorable climate and numerous warm mineral springs, these places have been inhabited almost continuously from ancient times to the present day. The earliest prehistoric settlements arose around the 5th millennium BC. Later, the territory was inhabited by the Thracian tribe of Besi.

3rd – 4th century AD

Unlike the other settlements in the Roman province of Thrace during this era, the settlement at the warm mineral springs /today's Hissar/ grew to such an extent that in the 3rd – 4th centuries AD it became a significant city for the settled people.

The beginning of the 4th century

During the time of Emperor Diocletian, the city was called Diocletianopolis. The most impressive examples of ancient culture in Hissar date from this period. A part of the fortress wall, 2315 m long, has been preserved, as well as the main city gate to Trimontium (Plovdiv), the amphitheater, early Christian basilicas, a necropolis and tombs.

Today Hisarya

With its over 20 hotels and balneo-sanatoriums with over 8,200 boarding beds, the city is one of the largest SPA resorts in the country, where thousands of tourists rest and receive treatment annually. The region is also known for its traditions in winemaking, the cultivation of natural fruits and vegetables, honey and dairy products.
